The mission of the Somerset County Voting Issues Task Force is to identify, investigate, and evaluate some of the recurring and ongoing issues affecting voting in Somerset County, NJ, and make recommendations to the Chair of the Somerset County Democratic Committee, either to take action and/or to communicate our concerns to the county Board of Elections.

The Board of Elections is a bipartisan body whose members are appointed by the Governor based on the recommendations of the Republican and Democratic County Chairs. Two of the members of Republicans and two are Democrats. The Board of Elections web site is http://www.co.somerset.nj.us/elections.

The Mission Statement of the Board of Elections:

“The Somerset County Board of Elections endeavors to ensure the integrity and accuracy of every election by administering fair and appropriate voting procedures which are in full compliance with federal and state election laws and regulations. The Board is strongly committed to timely registering every eligible voter as well as maintaining an accurate voter registration database for Somerset County. It is also a major priority of the Board to ensure that elections are held in sites that accommodate all voters, including those with mobility impairments. The Board also ensures that all voting machines are properly secured, equipped, maintained, and fully operational on Election Day.”

As a Task Force appointed by the Somerset County Democratic Party, our concern is seek to ensure appropriate oversight and accountability in the Board’s management of our primary and general elections, and to address specific issues and problems as they arise. Some of the topics we have addressed are:

Poll worker selection and training

Provisional and absentee ballots

The role of challengers

Reporting of incidents and resolution of issues
